We have had a great start to what is an action-packed Term. Last Thursday's Book Character Parade was a great opportunity for the school to get together and have some fun with some of our favourite book characters.
Term Four is the start of the summer months and we need our learners to have hats on while outside from next week onwards. We have a simple rule, no hat, no play out in the playground. Learners will need to stay in the covered or shaded areas. We also encourage whaanau to send children to school with sunscreen on. While we will have sunscreen available and do our best to remind our learners to put on sunscreen before heading out, we are not in a position to be able to apply it to learners throughout the day.
With the start of the warmer weather, Andy has also cranked up the school pool, which is already sitting at 22 degrees. We wish for it to be over 24 degrees before we start our swimming sessions. All going to plan; next week after Labour Weekend, the pool will be warm enough for our learners to start to use.
New Entrant Students for 2025
We are in the process of making our annual roll review with the Ministry of Education. This helps set our Staffing Entitlement and Operational Funding for our budget, and at the moment, the Ministry of Education has cut our numbers drastically. We ask if you have a child turning five in 2025 that you fill in a pre-enrolment form online or simply pop into the office and let the crew know.
If you know of family and friends who have children turning five, please encourage them to also pre-enrol their children as every name on the list helps us staff and run the school for next year.
Attendance
Let's say that chicken pox put paid to our very good attendance data. While the country's average for ‘regular’ attendance (90% or better) sits around 52%, our data in Term 3 dropped to match this, which is a shame as it would typically sit around 67-70%. We know attendance is directly related to successful learning outcomes, and we need to highlight the importance of regular attendance. If we can keep this in the back of our minds, that would certainly help both our attainment levels for end-of-year data, along with our attendance data that the Ministry collects and monitors.
Please don’t be offended if we have to send you a letter about your child’s attendance. This is all part of the Ministry’s expectations that schools monitor and respond to attendance.
School Organisation Evening
A big thank you to those whaanau members who were able to attend Tuesday Night's hui (meeting) where we shared the changes to the School Organisation and Structure moving forward. Traditionally this would have been the night we gave Year 2 parents and caregivers an opportunity to look at the Centre options as their child was moving into Year 3, which was traditionally moving into the ‘senior’ end of the school.
As previously mentioned, next year, we are moving to align our setting with the new phases of learning in the curriculum. This means our Year 3s from 2025 will align with Timatanga, which is Phase 1 of the new curriculum. Te Puna will become our Year 3 Centre from 2025 but will have one class next year that will cater for Year 2 and 3 students to help accommodate this year's class of Year 1 and 2 learners (Room 12) and to balance our numbers with the allocation of teachers we have for 2025.
What does that mean for our Senior End of the School? We will have two centres in the Senior End of the School, Kura (our more traditional spaces) and Auaha (our collaborative spaces). These will be a combination of Year 4/5 classes and Year 5/6 classes to accommodate numbers. Phase 2 of learning now spans across Year 4, 5 and 6. This means learners will have 3 years to work through the phase. The curriculum is now broken down into yearly learning progress (as we have had in the past) and will continue to meet the needs of individual learners depending on where they are up to, rather than delivering only the parts of the curriculum that fall into their year group.
As always, we will be sending out a Google Form for parents and caregivers to fill in for Year 4-6 learners with the 3 following options;
I would like my child to be in Koru
I would like my child to be in Auaha
I am happy for the school to place my child into one of the centres, either Koru or Auaha
Diwali
As part of our cultural awareness, we want to explore important events that happen throughout the year for our wider community. One of those events is Diwali, which will be observed between Thursday, 31 October - Saturday, 2 November. We wanted to share what this event is all about.
Below is a breakdown of Diwali and some key aspects of this time of year for our Hindu community.
Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a major Hindu festival celebrated by millions of people across the world. It typically lasts for five days and usually falls in either October or November, depending on the Hindu lunar calendar. Diwali is often referred to as the "Festival of Lights" because it involves the lighting of oil lamps or diyas, candles, and colourful lanterns as a symbol of the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.
The significance of Diwali can vary by region and community within India, but some common themes and celebrations include:
Victory of Light over Darkness: Diwali commemorates the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. It is associated with several mythological stories, with the most well-known being the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana and rescuing his wife, Sita.
Lakshmi Puja: Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity, is widely revered during Diwali. People perform special prayers and rituals to seek her blessings and ensure financial success in the coming year.
Decorations: Homes, temples, and public places are adorned with colourful rangoli (artistic designs made with coloured powders or flower petals), diyas, candles, and decorative lights. This creates a festive and welcoming atmosphere.
Fireworks: Fireworks displays are a common feature of Diwali celebrations. The bright and colourful fireworks light up the night sky, adding to the festive spirit.
Gifts and Sweets: Exchanging gifts and sweets is a traditional part of Diwali celebrations. Families and friends visit each other, offer gifts, and share delicious sweets and snacks.
Cleaning and Renovation: Before Diwali, people often clean and renovate their homes as a symbol of purifying and preparing for the arrival of the goddess of wealth.
New Clothes: Many people buy new clothes to wear during the festival, symbolising a fresh start and the shedding of old things.
Family Gatherings: Diwali is a time for families to come together, celebrate, and bond over special meals and rituals.
