It is hard to believe that we are in Week 8 already. Last week we held our annual speech finals for those who were in the competitive speech section for our Year 5/6 students. We are always amazed at the content, research and range of different topics that were covered on the day. While we would like to congratulate all our finalists for the great job they did in delivering their speech in front of the senior syndicate, we can only award three places. Congratulations to:
1st - Asha Ryan - Asha entertained us with a speech called 'Making Mistakes is Good'. Asha was able to grab the attention of the audience with an engaging start but pretended to make a mistake to start the speech. We were all able to relate to aspects of her speech.
2nd - Mia Hay - Mia's speech. 'Pollution and what we can do about it', was informative about the impact we are having on the environment and the things we can practically do to help reduce our impact. Mia delivered the speech with confidence and she had her content well rehearsed.
3rd - Charlie Butterfield - Charlie was able to deliver a speech that had been put together in a very short time - 'Sports that shouldn't be at the Olympics'. He used the motivation of the Olympics and gave a detailed account of the sports he believed should be kept at the Olympics and even gave suggestions for other sports to be included in the future.
Congratulations also goes to our other school speech finalists who bravely presented their fantastic speeches in front of the senior students and staff judges - you're all amazing and did a brilliant job: Sam Wood, Emma Gascoigne, Leo Shortland, Sehaj Cheema, Lily Nguyen, Sachi Cleaver and Caia Wells.
Asha and Mia both went on to represent our school at the Cambridge Rotary Speech Contest on Tuesday night and placed 5th and 6th out of 21 finalists. Well done, girls!!
Jo Baker Resignation
In the last newsletter, I informed the community about Pip, my right-hand person, leaving our kura. Well, it’s in this newsletter that I need to inform the community about my left-hand person, Jo Baker, who will be leaving us at the end of this term. Jo has been with us since the beginning of 2016, initially as the Office Manager and then as my PA. I would like to personally thank Jo, as without her assistance we wouldn’t have been able to achieve what we have. She is not only my Personal Assistant but also works closely with the whole Senior Leadership Team and Admin Team, ensuring all the important jobs are completed with finesse. Jo is the queen of school communications, systems and streamlining tasks, ensuring all the t's are crossed and the i's are dotted and we are always kept up-to-date. We appreciate Jo's hard work and dedication to our kura over the past (almost) 9 years and will definitely miss her sense of humour and quick wit in the office and staffroom alike.
While we are saying a sad goodbye to Jo, we know she won't be too far away having secured the Executive Officer role at Cambridge Middle School, which we know she will master quickly.
Term 3Inquiry Our Inquiry this term has been learning about our Local Stories and History. A part of this has been around the connection we have with the Kīngitanga (Māori kingdom). It has clearly been a big few weeks for the Kīngitanga with the passing of Kīngi (King) Tuheitia who leaves a legacy of kotahitanga - bringing people together. Only months before his death, Kīngi Tuheitia came to prominence with his ‘Hui a Motu’ (national meeting) to which 10,000 people turned up. The hui (meeting) was to unite the people against the Coalition Government’s moves to tamper with te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi), the founding document of Aotearoa New Zealand and partnership agreement between Tangata whenua Māori (indigenous peoples of Aotearoa) and Tangata Tiriti, those representing the Crown.
At the beginning of Term 3, our inquiry started with seven Kīngi (kings) and Kuīni (queens) to now adding a new Māori monarch for the Kīngitanga movement with Kuīni Ngaa Hono i te Po, Tuheitia's youngest daughter, taking over and continuing the legacy.
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori
Next week is an important week in our annual calender with Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) kicking off with this year’s theme being ‘Ake ake ake, A forever language.’ The theme captures the adaptability and resilience of te reo māori and the important part that kura (schools) play in the revitalisation of the language.
Te Kaahui Ako o Te Oko Horoi Celebration - Thursday, 19 September Te Kaahui Ako would like to extend an invitation to our community to attend the Kaahui Ako o Te Oko Horoi Celebration at Lake Te Koo Utu next Thursday, 19th September from 7am. Mana Whenau (Ngaati Korokii) will start the celebration with a Pai Maarire karakia, which is used to celebrate the naming of our Kaahui Ako, Te Oko Horoi, after the local area. This will all take place at Lake Te Koo Utu, which is an area of significance to the kiingitanga and adds to our local stories. We look forward to learning more about the local stories and seeing if anything special will be included as a result of the passing of the kīngi (king) and to acknowledge the new Kuīni (queen). After the celebration, we will share kai (please bring a small plate) before Mana Whenua will be heading to local schools, including Kemureti ki te Rawhiti (Cambridge East School), where they will come to see the learning our aakonga (students) have achieved over the last term. Please note that if you wish to bring your child to this event you will need to transport them to Lake Te Koo Utu, supervise them at the event and then drop them to school. School staff will be at the event, but they will not be supervising children. Please refer to the invitation below for more information and click here if you would like to bring your child to the event.
We look forward to this event and reconnecting with Mana Whenua.
Age Appropriate Online Content
Over the past few weeks, I have noticed an increase in the media around the impact of the online world on our youth. In Australia, they are currently looking at passing laws and working around how they keep their young people off social media apps and games that have an age rating. In Australia, they are looking to ban these products and online platforms up to the age of 16. The reason for this is to protect their youth, who do not have the ability to process and deal with the things they encounter online.
What does this have to do with our learners who are between the ages of 5 and 11? Last week, Pip and I had to deal with a group of 8 and 9-year-old boys who were involved in playing Fortnite with each other. Their interactions became negative, and their disagreement spilt over into our playground, resulting in threats of violence as the name-calling got out of hand.
While we are able to deal with these types of incidents, we need the community's support in not allowing your kids to access age-restricted games with online chat.
Key things we suggest you do:
Monitor your child/rens games and apps, including on phones, iPads, tablets, chromebooks, laptops and game consoles. Check their profiles are not set up with fake birthdays. Don’t allow or open up games/apps and chatrooms for your kids.
Play the games with your children or at least join in to learn what is inside the games and make sure you are happy with the games they are playing.
Set up time limits. This includes on your routers, which can set rules to open up and switch off the internet for set times on certain devices.
Make sure tablets, devices and consoles are in places that your children can not access at nightime. You will be amazed at the lengths they go to to be online or play games when you think they are asleep. You will need to hide these things! (believe me, I have learnt this the hard way too).
Take the time to watch John Parsons' videos, and come along to our community evenings for internet safety and parenting advice. You might think your children are too young, but you need to be on the front foot before these things become an issue.
